چکیده

In this study, we consider a manufacturer that has strategically decided to outsource the company specific reverse logistics (RL) activities to a third-party logistics (3PL) service provider. Given the locations of the collection centers and reprocessing facilities, the RL network design of the 3PL involves finding the number and places of the test centers under supply uncertainty associated with the quantity of the returns. Hybrid simulation-analytical modeling, which iteratively uses mixed integer programming models and simulation, is a suitable framework for handling the uncertainties in the stochastic RL network design problem. We present two hybrid simulation-analytical modeling approaches for the RL network design of the 3PL. The first one is an adaptation of a problem-specific approach proposed in the literature for the design of a distribution network design of a 3PL. The second one involves the development of a generic approach based on a recently proposed novel solution methodology. In the generic approach instead of exchanging problem-specific parameters between the analytical and simulation model, the interaction is governed by reflecting the impact of uncertainty obtained via simulation to the objective function of the analytical model. The results obtained from the two approaches under different scenario and parameter settings are discussed. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The use of third-party logistics (3PL) providers is regarded as new strategy in logistics management. The relationships by considering 3PL are sometimes more complicated than any classical logistics supplier relationships. These relationships have taken into account as a well-known way to highlight organizations' flexibilities to regard rapidly uncertain market conditions, follow core competenc...

A hybrid solution approach for a multi-objective closed-loop logistics network under uncertainty

The design of closed-loop logistics (forward and reverse logistics) has attracted growing attention with the stringent pressures of customer expectations, environmental concerns and economic factors. This paper considers a multi-product, multi-period and multi-objective closed-loop logistics network model with regard to facility expansion as a facility location–allocation problem, which more cl...

A holistic approach for selecting a third-party reverse logistics provider in the presence of vagueness

Growing environmental concerns have motivated businesses to carefully assess the environmental impact of their products and services at all stages of a life-cycle. Reverse logistics plays an important role in achieving ‘‘green supply chains’’ by providing customers with the opportunity to return the warranted and/or defective products to the manufacturer. An efficient reverse logistics structur...

Selection Model for a Third-Party Reverse Logistics Provider

Abstract With the development and advancement of reverse logistics concepts and practice, the evaluation and selection of vendors or partners for the specific function of reverse logistics support becomes more important. The factors that play an important role in selecting a third-party reverse logistics provider are different than the factors for selecting a forward provider. These factors are...
